African Baobab seeds have a very hard coat, so begin by scarifying them—gently nick or file a small spot on the seed or soak in warm (not boiling) water for 24–48 hours, changing the water daily. Plant the seeds about 1 inch deep in a well-draining mix (cactus/succulent soil blended with coarse sand or perlite). Maintain warm soil temperatures of 75–85°F and keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged until germination, which can take 2–6 weeks. Provide bright light once seedlings emerge. Water deeply but allow the soil to dry out between waterings as the plant develops its taproot and caudex. Protect from any frost or cold below 50°F. In cooler climates, grow as a container plant and overwinter indoors.
