Common Mallow Seeds (Malva neglecta) produce a hardy, low-growing annual (sometimes biennial) herb also known as dwarf mallow, cheeseweed, or buttonweed. This versatile plant features rounded, heart-shaped to shallowly lobed leaves with a slightly fuzzy texture and small, attractive flowers in shades of white to pale pink with darker veins. It typically grows 6–24 inches tall with a spreading, prostrate habit, making it excellent for ground cover, pollinator gardens, or wildflower patches. The plant develops a deep, tough taproot that can become woody with age. This root is edible and especially rich in mucilage, which gives it a thickening quality when boiled or steeped. Common Mallow is highly nutritious and fully edible — leaves, flowers, young seed pods (which resemble tiny cheese wheels), and roots are often used in salads, soups, and herbal teas for their mild, mucilaginous texture. Medicinally, it is prized as a soothing demulcent and emollient. The high mucilage content in the roots and seeds makes it excellent for calming irritated mucous membranes, helping with sore throats, dry coughs, digestive issues (such as acid reflux, ulcers, and constipation), and urinary tract discomfort. It also has anti-inflammatory, mild antibacterial, and skin-soothing properties, traditionally used topically for wounds, burns, rashes, and swellings.

Recommended Growing Zones: USDA Zones 4–8

Common Mallow (Malva neglecta) seed germination works best after breaking the hard seed coat. Lightly scarify the seeds by nicking them with a file or sandpaper, or soak them in warm water for 12–24 hours before planting. Sow the seeds ¼ to ½ inch deep in well-draining seed-starting mix or garden soil. Keep the soil consistently moist and at cool to moderate temperatures of 50–68°F (10–20°C). Germination typically occurs in 7–21 days but can be irregular and continue over several weeks. Seeds do not require cold stratification. Provide bright light once seedlings emerge. You can direct sow outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked.
